Behind the Design: From Sketch to Shirt

Ever wonder what goes into creating custom spirit wear? Take a behind-the-scenes look at how a simple idea becomes a finished shirt—from the first sketch and design concepts to selecting materials, testing layouts, and creating apparel that schools, PTAs, and families love.
When people receive their spirit wear order, they usually see the finished product—a shirt they're excited to wear to school events, Friday spirit days, or weekend games.
What they don't see is everything that happens before that shirt ever reaches the heat press.
At Layla Joelle Studios, every custom design starts with an idea. Sometimes it's a mascot. Sometimes it's a school tradition. Other times it's a simple email from a PTA saying, "We want something different this year."
That's where the fun begins.
Step 1: Getting to Know Your School
Before we ever open our design software, we learn about your school.
What's your mascot?
What are your school colors?
Do you want something vintage? Bold? Trendy? Classic?
Every school has its own personality, and we believe your spirit wear should reflect that.
Step 2: Sketching the Concept
Once we have a direction, we begin sketching ideas and creating digital concepts.
Sometimes the first design is exactly right.
Other times, we tweak fonts, move elements around, try different layouts, or experiment with color combinations until everything feels just right.
We don't rush this part because great designs take time.
Step 3: Choosing the Right Materials
Not every design is created the same way.
Depending on the look we're going for, we may use:
- DTF transfers
- Glitter heat transfer vinyl
- Puff vinyl
- Rhinestones
- Specialty finishes
- Layered vinyl techniques
Choosing the right material can completely change the final look of a design.
Step 4: Testing Before Production
Before we produce a full order, we often test the design to make sure sizing, placement, and colors look exactly the way we envisioned.
A design might look perfect on a computer screen but need a small adjustment once it's on a shirt.
That's why we pay attention to every detail.
Step 5: Bringing It to Life
Once everything is approved, production begins.
Whether we're pressing one shirt or hundreds, we take our time to make sure every design is centered, every color looks vibrant, and every finished product is something we'd proudly wear ourselves.
Quality is never something we rush.
